HVAC Humidity Problems & Solutions for Better Indoor Air Quality
When people think of HVAC systems, they often focus on heating and cooling—keeping their home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. But...
Is your air conditioner blowing air but not cooling? Here are some ways to troubleshoot the problem so you can save time and money otherwise spent on technician visits. Before coming to a conclusion, ask yourself – how hot it is outside and how long you have been facing the problem. If the outside temperature is above average, you need to fine-tune your air conditioner for your specific needs. So before you spend time troubleshooting any problems, try adjusting your air temperature and giving your home time to regulate. If you persistently face this issue, look for additional signs, as mentioned below, for an appropriate solution.
Clogged air filters can restrict heating and cooling. So if the filters are dirty, get rid of the buildup or get a replacement filter to keep the system working efficiently. This will ensure clean air, proper airflow, and a smoothly running air conditioner.
Regularly check your thermostat setting. Someone else could have changed it, or you accidentally hit a button, causing the AC to not cool. If you have an old thermostat, you can install a new smart device to better regulate your home’s air temperatures. You can also contact an HVAC tech to help you understand some internal diagnostics and better interpret that information.
If your refrigerant leaks, there is a quick fix to repair the leak. Refrigerant isn’t like your car’s oil that needs to be changed regularly, but when the coolant leaks, a refill does the job. This requires contacting a professional HVAC technician to perform the task and keep up your system’s ability to cool the air.
Another reason your AC is running but not cooling could be that your ductwork is old and damaged, meaning it has developed possible leaks. If you suspect that your HVAC system has damaged ducts, contact a specialist. If you aren’t sure, they can still assess the condition of the duct to suggest further actions.
If your air conditioner is more than ten years old, it is likely time to replace the unit. It may be losing efficiency, using R-22 refrigerant, which can be expensive in case of a refill, or may be undersized for your expanding space. If your unit is old, it won’t be able to keep up with outside heat, and you may need to replace it.
